Men in South Africa are increasingly seeking more convenient and discreet medical treatment for their sexual health issues, according to a new study.
The findings, led by researchers from the South African Medical Research Foundation, also show that many men in the country are seeking more discreet and cost-effective medical advice.
Men with erectile dysfunction, or ED, are more likely to be prescribed stronger medications like sildenafil, the brand name for Viagra, than men with more complex sexual health issues, including male pattern baldness.
Sildenafil is the main drug for treating impotence, and its effectiveness is known to vary. It does not cause an erection or a full-on orgasm, but it can slow down ejaculation and increase confidence.
Sildenafil is the most common cause of ED in men. In the study, the researchers analysed data from the South African Drug Information Network (SADIN) from 2006 to 2019.
SADIN is a network of government-funded drug makers, which makes a drug called Viagra available for men with erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
PDE5 inhibitors work by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which relaxes the smooth muscles in the penis and increases blood flow.
This increase in blood flow helps men with ED achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil also increases blood flow to the penis, resulting in more firm and prolonged erections.
The researchers found that erectile dysfunction was more common among men who took Sildenafil and those who took a higher dose of Viagra, but the men who took the lower dose had no increased risk of ED.
This is the first study to directly compare the effect of different doses of sildenafil and Viagra on the risk of ED in men with erectile dysfunction and found that those who took Sildenafil and Viagra had a slightly higher risk of ED than those who took a lower dose.
The results were published inSexual Medicinethis month.
The researchers say that this could provide additional treatment options for men with ED who do not respond to stronger treatments like.
“The results from this study suggest that the increased risk of ED among men who take Sildenafil and Viagra may not be due to the use of a lower-dose sildenafil, but could be attributed to the increased blood flow to the penis observed in the men who took the higher-dose of sildenafil,” said Dr Tereng Cui, research and clinical director of South Africa’s Sexual Medicine Research Program.
Cui said that while this research showed that men who take Viagra and Sildenafil may need more medical help for sexual problems, this does not mean that all men will need to be treated for ED. Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors can cause side effects, but not all men will benefit from PDE5 inhibitors.
“For these men, sildenafil is a good choice if they have mild ED and prefer a lower dose of the drug,” Cui said.

Cui said that while men who are not experiencing ED may benefit from more aggressive treatment and counselling, they should be on the lookout for more serious sexual side effects and have a history of priapism.
“Men who have erectile dysfunction should discuss their concerns with a GP and seek help immediately if they experience an erection lasting more than four hours,” he said.
Cai said that while the findings were encouraging, men with erectile dysfunction should still seek help and that the risk of erectile dysfunction could be higher than men without erectile dysfunction.“I think what people need to realize is that a lot of men don’t necessarily get the right treatment because of the side effects of their medication,” Cui said.
